Meet The Owner

MS. Jhay

Jhay levy also known as "mary jhay" is a media personality & mentor from chicago, il. she created the term "chocolate baddie" in 2015 on the campus of southern illinois university. the term stemmed from consistent insults of men & women saying "You're cute to be dark-skinned." Jhay used the term “Chocolate” to embrace her dark-skin and “baddie” to represent the BEAUTY, STRENGTH, POWER, AND REBELLION of her melanin skin tone.  Her goal is to spread the awareness of colorism and embrace all shades of melanin by promoting “chocolate baddie” as a statement of saying “all people of color are some form of brown or chocolate, and ultimately none of us are the color black.”

In 2017, mary Jhay started  her radio show on wdbx 91.1fm in the southern illinois area. the chocolate baddie show sparked the conversation of colorism.  The radio show took over the small town immediately and effectively brought the community together through a digital media platform. The Chocolate Baddie Show gave a platform for other creatives and black-owned businesses to showcase their services. After graduating from SIUC, Jhay went on to serve with AmeriCorps for a year of service at Wendell Phillips Academy. During her service at Phillips, Jhay posed as a math tutor and inspirational mentor to youth. It was then when Jhay realized that it was important to teach not only her peers but also youth these core values of self-love, respect, and empowerment.
